SOURCE 31 is a lead-insulated source holder that contains a radioactive source that emits gamma radiation.
Gamma radiation has the advantage that it can penetrate all kinds of materials, which means that the radiometric measurement can be used for most types of containers.

The source holder is lined with lead, and inside the source holder is the radioactive source. This is a small metal cylinder of just 16mm which contains a small disc of ceramic on which a little radioactive material is dripped. The source sits a little asymmetrically in the source holder, so that when the source is closed, the source is turned away from the opening in the source holder.
