Testing Methods

Legionella Test Kit 169

The Marine/industrial Legionella Field Test kit

This is a presence/absence test and is based on an immunoassay method (similar to a pregnancy test). 

Laboratory analysis has demonstrated that tests are positive for clean water samples containing 100 CFU/Litre Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. The limit of detection (LOD) of the test is equivalent to 100 CFU/L when a 250 ml sample is filtered. If smaller volumes are processed the detection limit will be altered accordingly.

This kit is mainly used for: 

  • Pipe fittings for hot and cold water system
  • Cooling towers
  • Showers
  • Water tanks

The Swab Legionella Field Test kit

This is a presence/absence test and is based on an immunoassay method (similar to a pregnancy test). 

The limit of detection (LOD) of the swab test is 200 CFU/swabbed area. The test has been evaluated for operation on samples between 10–45 °C (50–113 °F). A wide range of non-oxidizing biocides and biodispersants have been checked for cross reaction and interference with the test.

This kit is mainly used for: 

  • Hot and cold water systems
  • Cooling towers and water tanks
  • Fountians, hot tubs and pools
  • Sinks and showers
  • Misters, sprinklers, air washers, humidifiers and others

Legionella Testing

For Legionella testing the following rules apply:

  • 0 – 100 CFU/Litre - Acceptable
  • 101 – 1000 CFU/Litre - Warning
  • 1000+ CFU/litre - Unacceptable

The legionella test kits provided have a minimum detection limit of 200 CFU/Litre. This falls within the warning levels of between 101 – 1000 CFU/Litre. A general risk assessment would need to be reviewed to ascertain why the levels are increasing. As the test kits detect the ‘killer’ serogroup 1 strain which is important and also provide early warning signs that the legionella bacteria are within the system. Samples can be then sent away for further laboratory analysis, rather than waiting for the limits to exceed 1000+ CFU/Litre.

Testing Procedure

The Marine/industrial Legionella Field Test kit

For optimum results the test should be performed at room temperature. The foil wrapping should NOT be opened until immediately prior to running the test. If the foil is opened and the test is NOT performed within 60 minutes discard the test.

Follow these steps:

  1. Fit the Pipework Adapter
  2. Take a Sample
  3. Recover the Bactaria
  4. Add Sample to Test Strip
  5. Interpreting the Results.
