Ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters are mounted externally on pipes and use ultrasound to measure the medium's velocity. You can combine this with the pipe's cross-sectional area to calculate the flow rate. Clamp on flow meters are ideal for corrosive media and hygienic applications in food and pharma, since these meters work without contacting the medium. They also serve as verification tools for other flow meters. A key advantage is easy installation without cutting pipes or stopping flow, as they simply clamp onto the outside.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Siemens SITRANS FS220 ultrasonic clamp on flow meter
The SITRANS FS220 is an ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter designed for simple applications with clean liquids. It is ideal for pipe sizes ranging from 12.7 mm to 10 m, with standard wall thicknesses of 1 to 35 mm (up to 65 mm as an option) and compatible with pipe materials such as metals, glass, FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic), and most PVC variants. Additionally, it offers a measurement accuracy of ±1.0% for flow rates above 0.3 m/s.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Siemens SITRANS FS230 ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter
The SITRANS FS230 is an ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter designed for a wide range of industrial applications with liquids, hydrocarbons, and gases. It is ideal for pipe sizes ranging from 12.7 mm to 10 m, with wall thicknesses from 0.64 ... 76.2 mm, and compatible with pipe materials that conduct ultrasound, such as steel, plastic, aluminum, glass, cement, ductile iron, and copper. Additionally, it offers a measurement accuracy of ±0.5 ... 1.0% for flow rates above 0.3 m/s.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Siemens SITRANS FS290 portable ultrasonic clamp on flow meter
The SITRANS FS290 is a portable ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter that can be used for temporary measurements, leakage detection, as well as control and verification measurements on liquids. It is ideal for pipe sizes ranging from 12.7 mm to 6 m, with wall thicknesses from 0.50 to 35 mm, and compatible with pipe materials that conduct ultrasound, such as metals and plastics, though not suitable for cement or composite plastics. Additionally, it offers a measurement accuracy of ±1.0% of the flow rate for flow speeds above 0.3 m/s.

This is how ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters work
Ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters measure fluid flow by using ultrasonic sound waves without direct contact with the fluid. They are mounted externally on a pipe and operate by transmitting ultrasonic pulses through the pipe walls. Depending on the type, they use either the transit-time method (measuring the time difference of sound traveling with and against the flow) or the Doppler method (detecting frequency shifts caused by particles or bubbles in the flow). These meters are non-invasive, making them ideal for applications where cutting the pipe or interrupting the flow is not desirable.
